Your Lytle Pirates Boys Varsity Basketball Team played in the Hondo Tournament this past weekend. Opening tournament play against a very fast and talented Cole team, Deandre Harden led the scoring for the Pirates, however we dropped our first game and quickly became aware of the caliber competition we were to face in the two-day event. Our next game was a preview of upcoming opponent Blanco, as the Pirates took on the Panthers in a tough fought game. Senior post, Alex Mullins continued to improve and played well, earning a double-double in the game. Too many turnovers however, proved costly for the Pirates as we lost this game on Friday as well.

Saturday was a new day for the Pirates, as the team arrived focused and seeking redemption to take on Moore High School from Ingram, TX. Led by junior point guard, Noah Vasquez, the Pirates jumped on top of the Warriors early, finishing the first quarter with a five-point lead. Great defensive energy from Isaiah Gomezand improved defensive play from Kannon Hunter led to big points off turnovers for Chris Davila and Jorge Holguin. The Warriors battled towards a comeback down the stretch but clutch free throws from Freshman John Martinez and a big three pointer from Sophomore William Cogburn put the final dagger in the Warriors, thus sealing the Pirate victory 69-61.

The win advanced the Pirates to the Consolation Championship Game against the Red Ants of Progreso High School. Senior guard, Manny Estrada set the tone for the Pirates during pre-game as he continued to tally over twenty, three point shots made (in the three-point competition segment of the tournament). The Pirates and the Red Ants exchanged baskets and defensive stops for most of the first half with the Red Ants taking a seven-point lead in to halftime. Unfortunately, the Pirates were unable to play well enough the second half to contend with Progreso, resulting in a loss.

The Pirates Boys Varsity Basketball Team is now 2-7 on the season but has shown steady improvement and beginning to understand the basketball philosophy and mentality the coaches are attempting to instill. Our next game is Tuesday Dec. 6 @ Hondo Owls. Thanks for your continued support. Go Pirates!
